With Citizen Vs. Narwhal, Portland, Oregon musician Jason Baker unveils his debut self-titled solo album, a 33 minute sonic journey through a dreamy, guitar-heavy musical landscape defined equally by hammer of the gods riffing and floating synth ambience. Following up on his work with the progressive-leaning Portland rock band Oxcart and as guitarist / vocalist with the Pink Floyd tribute Pigs on the Wing, Baker takes things in a different direction this time, performing ( and recording / producing) the album himself with the help of Alex Feletar ( drums) and Matt Jones ( synth). The result is a sound that has dropped any math rock tendencies in favor of a heavy yet dynamic musical soundscape and songwriting style.

Nailing down a single set of influences would be difficult with this album; though the Nirvana reference is obvious, hearing the psychedelic tendencies of the Flaming Lips and Tame Impala or the modern pop- rock madness of Nothing But Thieves may require a closer listen. The elephant in the closet is of course Pink Floyd, an influence Baker could hardly escape even if he wanted to, having spent the last 10 years as lead guitarist for the Portland based Pink Floyd tribute band Pigs on the Wing. The relationship of Pink Floyd to this album is subtle – don't expect soaring Gilmour guitar solos or choirs of schoolchildren – but it's definitely there in both the careful attention to songwriting structure and the deliberate atmospheric-ness of the album as a whole.

Citizen Vs. Narwhal was recorded and mixed by Jason Baker at his own home based Sasquatch? Studio in Portland as well as the brooding, historic environment of the Bingen Theater in rural Washington state. Mastering was courtesy of Amy Dragon at Telegraph audio in Portland, OR. The album is available in both physical and digital format via cdbaby.com, and online via i-tunes and other popular digital music stores.
